New Associate Editor

We are delighted to announce that Professor Kazuo Inaba has accepted an invitation to become our latest Associate Editor for Biology of the Cell, an Academic Journal disseminating all aspects of cellular and molecular biology, development and cell physiology.

Kazuo Inaba is Director and Professor of Shimoda Marine Research Center at the University of Tsukuba, Japan.

Biology of the Cell 2010 - Cover of the Year: August

The cover shows hippocampal neurons on glia developing a network of dendrites (MAP2; red) which are contacted by presynaptic sites (Synapsin1; green) after 3 weeks in culture. Although synaptic vesicle fusion delays neurite outgrowth during early development, it is not required for establishing the mature network.

Congratulations to Tatiana Boiko for presenting this image of hippocampal neurons for our August journal cover, judged to be the most visually appealing cover of the issues published in 2010. Tatiana will receive a subscription to Biology of the Cell as part of the award.

Biology of the Cell 2010 - Paper of the Year

We are pleased to announce that Dr Heijnen and his colleagues from the University Medical Center Utrecht are the recipients of the Biology of the Cell - Paper of the Year Award for 2010. The paper was selected by the senior tier of the Editorial Board from the Papers of the Month 2010. Dr Heijnen,Hezder E. van Nispen tot Pannerden, Willie J. Geerts and Monique J. Kleijmeer all receive a free subscription to the Journal as part of the award.

F1000 evaluations - new free service for readers

We have reached an agreement with F1000 to make available each month three evaluations of articles from Biology of the Cell from the F1000 website. These evaluations help to put the articles in context and provide opinion and perspective from leading researchers working in the field. In addition, we will include the F1000 Factor beside articles that have been evaluated by F1000 from Biology of the Cell - highlighting how many of the Journal's articles have been selected and rated as important by the F1000 service.

Biology of the Cell paper in the spotlight

A paper by Jeremy Blaydes and colleagues "Expression of CtBP family protein isoforms in breast cancer and their role in chemoresistance" in the January issue of Biology of the Cell sheds light on how CtBP family proteins represent potential targets for therapeutic strategies for the treatment of cancer in general, and breast cancer in particular.

SBCF Young Investigator Awards - 'ASCB2009'

Bernard Ducommun presents the SBCF Young Investigator Awards to Danielle Stalder (right) and Estelle Brioude (left) at the ASCB meeting in San Diego, 5-9 December.

Danielle Stalder is a PhD student in Bruno Anthony's laboratory in Nice-Sofia Antipolis (France). Using biophysical, biochemistry and cell biology approaches, she studies the molecular mechanisms involved in the new discovered cascade by which Arf6-GTP recruits ARNO at the plasma membrane and in turn activates Arf1.

Poster title: Activation mechanisms of the nucleotide exchange factor ARNO

Estelle Brioude is a PhD student in Thierry Lorca's laboratory at the CRBM in Montpellier (France). This young scientist is involved in an important fundamental work on the role of the Greatwall kinase in cell cycle entry. She uses both Xenopus oocytes and human cells to discover the mechanisms responsible for Greatwall activation.

Poster title: Mechanism of activation of the Greatwall kinase in cell cycle
